The Millennium Institute program funds centers of excellence dedicated to carrying out curiosity-driven fundamental research that, using rigorous indicators, demonstrates a qualitative leap in scientific production, inter-institutional collaboration, and knowledge transfer. Its ultimate goal is for these institutes to establish themselves as Latin American and global leaders in their disciplines, disseminating the knowledge generated to all of society and contributing to the country’s comprehensive development.
MILLENNIUM INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY (IMO)
In the latest version of the Millennium Institute Competition for Natural and Exact Sciences, the National Research and Development Agency (ANID) awarded a ten-year funding renewal to the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO), directed by University of Concepción academic Osvaldo Ulloa. In this new stage, the IMO will include Associate Professor Marcos Moreno from the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering as Alternate Director.
The Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) explores the depths of the Pacific Ocean—including the Atacama Trench at over 8,000 meters depth—with its Integrated Deep Ocean Observation System (IDOOS). Its goal is to understand how deep water circulation, hadal biodiversity, and trench tectonics influence the climate, the global carbon cycle, and the risk of megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis. Its research lines combine underwater robotics, buoys, free-fall landers, and machine learning in three main areas: hydrodynamics, biogeochemistry, and marine geodynamics.
The IMO trains national talent, integrates international expeditions, and positions Chilean science at the forefront of global oceanography.
